Realistic Results: What People Typically Earn in Direct Sales

You'll find plenty of stories about big earnings online. They are, by definition, not typical. Here's how to find out what's actually typical for a specific company.

Read the income disclosure statement

Many direct-sales companies publish an income disclosure statement (IDS). When you read one, look for:

  • Who's included. Does it count all participants, or only "active" or "qualified" ones? Excluding people who earned nothing makes results look better.
  • Median vs. average. A few top earners can pull the average far above what a typical person makes. The median is more realistic.
  • Gross vs. net. Most statements show gross payments from the company, before your expenses.
  • Time period. Is it annual, monthly, or per campaign?
  • Retail profit. Some statements don't capture profit from selling at retail, and some don't capture the cost of products reps bought themselves.

What the FTC says

The FTC warns that promoters may pitch the idea that you can quit your job or get rich, and advises consumers to look past the pitch: ask for written terms, look for evidence of real retail sales to outside customers, and consider how much it will cost you to run the business. Be wary of any company that pressures you to join quickly.

Set your own realistic test

  1. Fill in the cost worksheet.
  2. Set a fixed trial period (for example, three months) and a spending cap.
  3. Track every sale, cost and hour.
  4. At the end, calculate your net profit per hour and decide honestly whether to continue.
