How Commissions Generally Work in Beauty Direct Sales
Every company's plan is different and changes over time, so we don't quote rates here. Instead, here's how plans are typically structured, so you can read any company's plan confidently. For actual figures, check the company's current compensation plan and earnings statement.
Common building blocks
- Discount or commission tiers. Your percentage often rises with your sales volume in a "campaign" or period. Find out what counts toward volume (retail price? a lower "points" value?).
- Online sales. Orders through your personal web store may pay a different rate than in-person orders.
- Minimums. Some plans require a minimum order or sales level to earn, or to stay "active."
- Team bonuses. Percentages paid on your recruits' sales, often requiring you to hit personal and team targets.
- Fees and deductions. Brochure costs, shipping or service fees may be deducted from what you earn.
Worked example (illustration only)
Here's how to calculate your own figures. Plug in real numbers from the company's plan:
- Customer sales in a period: S
- Your earnings rate at that level: R%
- Gross earnings = S × R%
- Minus your costs for the period (samples, shipping, fees, ads): C
- Net profit = (S × R%) − C
Then divide net profit by the hours you worked to see your real hourly rate.
Questions to ask a company or recruiter
- Where is the current compensation plan published?
- What's the most recent income disclosure statement, and what did the median participant earn?
- Do those figures include or exclude expenses?
- Is there a minimum purchase to stay active?
- Will you buy back unsold products, and on what terms?
- How much of top earners' income comes from recruiting vs. customer sales?
The FTC recommends asking for written compensation terms and average earnings after expenses. See What are MLM disclosure statements really telling you? (FTC consumer alert, accessed October 27, 2026).
